Abstract
Binongko Island, located in Wakatobi Regency, possesses significant local economic potential rooted in fisheries, agriculture, and blacksmithing. The community’s economic activities primarily revolve around the daily afternoon market; however, the current market falls short in terms of comfort, functionality, and infrastructure. This situation necessitates planning and construction of a market that effectively supports buying and selling activities, enhances service quality, and reinforces local cultural identity. This research aims to design the afternoon market on Binongko Island using a Neo-Vernacular Architecture approach, an architectural concept that integrates traditional and modern elements without compromising local cultural values. This approach is manifested through the design of stilt houses, the use of local materials, wooden structures, and the incorporation of ornamentation characteristic of Buton traditional houses. The design process involved collecting primary and secondary data, conducting site and space-use analyses, conducting user analysis, and studying the cultural and climatic characteristics of the coastal area. The results demonstrate that applying the Neo-Vernacular concept produced a functional market design that adapts to the coastal environment while reflecting the local architectural identity. The proposed market serves not only as a venue for economic activity but also as a social and cultural space that promotes environmental sustainability and strengthens the identity of the Binongko Island community.
