Abstract

ABSTRACT Alesandro Mahatma Prayogi. 2018. AN ANALYSIS OF OLIVE’S MOTIVATION IN EASY A English Literature Department, Faculty of Humanities University of Technology Yogyakarta Alesmahatma@gmail.com This research analyses the motivation of the main character of EASY A movie, Olive Panderghast. There are two purposes need to be reached; 1) find out Olive’s personality as depicted in the movie; and 2) find out Olive’s personality as viewed from Abraham Maslow’s theory of motivation. This research uses qualitative research. Analysis was done using library research. The data were gathered from journals discuss about personality and Maslow’s theory of motivation. The study of Olive’s personality is done by examining and interpreting the behaviors and the character’s relationship with others. Olive’s motivation was analysed using Maslow’s theory of motivation. There are three major personalities of Olive as depicted in the movie, which are a cheerful, an empathetic and a bold person. Olive’s actions in the movie are satisfied the five levels Maslow’s hiearchy of needs: physiological needs, safety needs, love needs, esteem needs, and finally selft-actualization needs. The three major personalities of Olive as depicted in the movie are interconnected with the highest level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
