Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse the personality development of Jack Torrance in Stephen King’s The Shining. There are three problems analysed in this study: (1) the changes in Jack’s personality; (2) the reasons why Jack’s personality change; (3) influence of Jack’s family and environment toward his personality development. The writer uses M.H. Abrams’s Objective Theory and Personality Development Theory by Rawls and Hurlock. The data were analysed by using library research. The data were collected by reading the novel repeatedly, reading some references related to the theory and the novel and taking note of important data to make a conclusion. The analysis of this research results in some findings. There are some changes in Jack’s personality from before and after he works at the hotel. He becomes temperamental, irrational and selfish compared to the usually loving, rational and considerate version of himself before he works at the hotel. The writer finds three reasons why Jack’s personality change. They are: (1) pressure; (2) trauma; (3) weather. The writer also finds the influence of family and environment toward personality development of Jack. The family influences him negatively by the usage of bad words and Jack’s abusive father which make Jack uses bad words and becomes abusive himself. The environment also influences him in a bad way. He becomes a drunkard because his friend is also a drunkard. Key words: personality, influence, family, environment, development.
