Abstract

This research analysis the conditions of social life was reflected in Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The analysis focuses on social life conditons in the novel. There are two main problems found in this research: (1) the life illustrated in the Oliver Twist, (2) the characters dealing with the life. This research uses the sociology theory by Alan Swingewood to describe the conditions of social life when industrial revolution occured, he says “One demanding a high level of skill, this research views literature as a historical event”. This research also uses descriptive analysis which focuses on the context in dialog and narration. The social life in England society in that era was influenced by industrial revolution such as urbanization, social class, poverty illustrated by several characters. A hard life makes people do anything to survive, some people can accept it, some other people can not. Keyword : social life, industrial revolution, social class, poverty
