Abstract

This study discusses two problems. The first problem is to observe the categories of politeness strategies in Javanese language dialogue from Kotagede of Yogyakarta. The second is to know the reason why people apply politeness strategies in Kotagede of Yogyakarta. The second problem is the part to collaborate the politeness strategies theory. This study is cultural research in a rural area. It means that the data were gathered by observation in the rural area by taking note, record a conversation, and observe an activity of people in Kotagede. The data are also found in a theory of politeness strategy from the other researchers especially from Brown and Levinson. The writer tries to show a table of conversation from his observation in the chapter and give example about the form of politeness strategies used in Kotagede. There are three Javanese speech levels (Krama,Madya, Ngoko). The three speech levels can be collaborated by four politeness strategy (Positive politeness, Negative Politeness, Bald on record, Bald off record). It means that the two materials are focused in this research. Keywords : politeness, dialogue, Brown Levinson,Javanese, Kotagede, speech levels.
