Abstract

Language is a very important instrument for people to communicate in order to deliver what they have in their minds. This is the very main device of humans to perform the proper communication. But sometimes they need to say something but saying as it is will not deliver what they really mean to the listener, so here, people use the figurative language. Figurative language can be a word, some words, or even one full sentence which is sometimes heard far from the fact with what the speaker says. This study aims to analyse the figurative language found in Trevor Noah’s Stand Up comedy Show “Son of Patricia”. The first one is to identify the number of figurative language found, the second one is to classify the type of figurative language; why it is categorized as figurative language and the last one is to determine the function of the figurative language found in the video. The method of research in this study is a qualitative descriptive and quantitative research. The reference books were used as the basic theories to find the subcategories of translations and the translation ideologies. The object of this research is Trevor Noah’s Stand Up comedy Show “Son of Patricia”. The data of this research are in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The data collecting technique is done by observing and noting. After that, the analysis technique is done by making a content analysis. The data are put into the data sheet. The result of this research shows that some types of figurative languages found in the stand-up comedy show Son of Patricia by Trevor Noah are: Metaphor, symbolism, simile, apostrophe, paradox, irony, synecdoche, personification, hyperbole, and litotes. The most type of figurative language used is Hyperbole (20%) and Synecdoche is just used once (2%). The function of figurative languages found in the stand-up comedy show Son of Patricia by Trevor Noah is to give imaginative pleasure, bring additional imagery, increase emotional intensity, and say much in brief compass.
