Abstract
This final paper entitled A study of English Suffix –ance and –ence in the novel Emma by Jane Austeen is aimed at findings the word formation, word class and meaning of suffix –ance and –ence in a word. This study belongs to a qualitative research because the data were in the form of text and the data were not anayzed by using any statistical procedure. The data were taken from a novel entitled Emma by Jane Austeen The data were collected from reading novel. Searching and underlining the suffix – ance and –ence, and putting them in file. The data were analyzed by the procedure of data reduction, data display and conclusion. She focused on the suffix –ance and –ence. She made a table and put the data into the table to answer the questions in the problem formulation. Next she drew a conclusion. The result of this study shows that the word ended in suffix –ance and –ence has several forms such as X + ance= Xance, Xe + ance= Xance, Xy→i + ance= Xance, X + ence= Xence, Xe + ence= Xence, X + m + ence= Xence, the word class can be added suffix –ance and ence are verb category, adjective category, adverb category. The meaning of suffix –ance and –ence are action or process, quality or state, and amount or degree. Key words: suffix, -ance and –ence, form, type of words, meaning, novel
