Abstract

This research is aimed at finding of defense mechanism applied by the murderer character in Nemesis, Miss Clotilde Bradbury-Scott. This research explains and reveals about (1) the conflicts in the novel (2) the anxieties of a murderer and (3) the defense mechanisms of a murderer. In the analysis, this research uses library and qualitative research. The researcher utilizes the novel itself Nemesis, articles, journals and such. The qualitative is used by making descriptive method through events and actions in the story related to identification process of anxiety and defense mechanism. This research applies the theory of anxiety and defense mechanism in psychoanalysis. These theories are applied to reveal that anxiety and defense mechanism occur to the murderer in the novel. The researcher tries to analyze the conflict, anxiety and defense mechanism. Then, the researcher classfies its types. This research finds some results. By classifying process, the researcher finds three types of conflicts which are man against himself, man against man and man against environment. It is also found three types of anxiety which are realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety and moral anxiety. At last but not least, there are six types of defense mechanism in this research which are displacement, denial, rationalization, projection, negativism and symphatism.
