Abstract
This research is to know the irony in Animal Farm novel, a poitical novel, that was written by George Orwell. The research utilizes qualitative methods and the primary data are taken from the novel. The researcher does some steps in doing the research such as gathering and classifying data, analyzing data, and concluding the research based on the data. Those data are categirized into three aspects; irony in domination, betrayal, and manipulation. The researcher uses Objective theory that was introduced by M.H. Abrams and focuses on the primary data. Ironical things which are used in the novel are verbal irony and situational irony. This research, all of the contents of the novel are included into irony. The irony in the novel is divided into two aspects; verbal irony and situational irony. There are three characters who perform the irony. They are Napolleon, Squeller, and animal worker. Napollean as the leader treats the animal unfairly and utilizes his power. Ironically, the animal workers get more sufferings under Napolleon’s power.Betrayal is the leader’s way to take over the domination. Hopes and the dreams which deal with prosperity will be only propaganda that is played by the leader through Squerrel. The irony itself influences the plot and characterization of the novel. Hence, the impact of the irony toward the plot can be known when the plotting of the story changed from forward to backward. And the impact of ironies to characterization are seen in their behaviours changing. Keywords: irony, domination, power, propaganda, betrayal
