Abstract

This final paper analyzes Collodi’s novel, Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet. This novel presents a journey of a puppet wood to be a real boy. The primary objective of this research is to reveal the significances of any symbols used in the novel. This study observes the objects found in the novel that is limited to contextual symbol. It also gives elaborate discussion based on the context of the symbol is used. This final paper applies objective approach and symbolism theory, since it is the most suitable approach to use to study the symbolism in this novel. Library research is used to support the analysis. The result of the analysis shows that this novel is reach in symbolic meaning. Collodi uses symbols as an effective literary device to achieve theme which is about the search of self identity of a child. There are twelve symbols found in this novel: Pinocchio, the Talking-cricket, Geppetto, the Fox and the Cat,the Blue Fairy, the Coachman, Pinocchio’s long nose, the donkey, the Dogfish, the sea, the Land of Boobies, and the Village of Industrious Bees.
