Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the psychopathic traits of the main character in the short story The Tell Tale Heart. There are two problems analyzed in this study: 1) the psychopathic characteristic of the narrator in the story; 2) the way the narrator does his psychopathic actions. The writer uses M.H. Abram’s Objective Theory and Psychological Theory to help her study the subject. The data were analyzed by using qualitative research design. The data were collected by reading the short story carefully and repeatedly, taking notes of the important hints and parts, atmosphere, situation, and story line of the story. This research results in some findings. There are four psychopathic traits that suit with the narrator character: 1) manipulative; which is shown in his interaction with the old man, the reader, and the policemen, 2) impulsive; he has short temper that makes him does things without thinking the consequences, 3) criminal; he commits some brutal crimes, such as planning the murder, stalking, murdering and mutilating, 4) lack s guilt; he enjoy the situation when he does his crime, and after the crime he feels relieved and acts as if nothing has happened.
