Abstract
This present paper explores the roles and responsibilities of teachers in building the students’ character. In fact, apart from teaching school subjects, teachers must help students to grow, develop students’ personality and to promote character education in their classroom practice during the teaching and learning process. Therefore, the statement of problems are set as follows; (1) what are the roles and responsibilities of teachers in building the students’ character; (2) how teachers can serve as role model by teaching character and the moral virtues of honesty, trust, fainess, respect and responsibility; (3) what approaches should be applied by teachers in their classroom practice to promote character education in the schools. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The roles and responsiblities of teachers in building students’ character, teachers’ model, and the appropriate approaches to be applied in the classroom practice were descriptively described and analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis. Several relevant data and literatures required in this study were gathered through a number of resources, such as research articles, books, journals, and from researcher’s own classroom observation. In addition, documentation study was also utilized in order to back up the data for an intensive disscussion. Finally, the roles and responsibilities of teachers in achieving the overall goals of character education cannot be ignored as it is the continuing efforts to enhance character education in Indonesia.
