Abstract

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini adalah penelitian yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan Simple Past Tense melalui Grammar Translation Method. Masalah yang dirumuskan dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimana Grammar Translation Method meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan Simple Past Tense. Penelitian ini menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas-Classroom Action Research (CAR). Rancangan penelitian tindakan Kurt Lewin diterapkan dalam penelitian ini. Ia memiliki empat tahap, Perencanaan-Planning, Bertindak-Acting, Mengamati-Observing, dan Mencerminkan-Reflecting. Itu dilakukan menjadi dua siklus. Subyek penelitian adalah siswa kelas X jurusan TFLM 1 (Teknik Fabrikasi Logam dan Manufaktur) pada tahun akademik 2017/2018. Ada 32 siswa. Dalam mengumpulkan data, saya menggunakan Uji-Test (pre-test dan post-test) dalam bentuk terjemahan esai yang terdiri dari 25 soal. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Grammar Translation Method berhasil meningkatkan Simple Past Tense siswa. Terbukti pada siklus 1, nilai rata-rata siswa dalam pre-test adalah 23,8. Kemudian, nilai rata-rata siswa dalam post-test adalah 56,2. Pada siklus 2, nilai rata-rata siswa dalam pre-test 2 adalah 18,4. Kemudian, nilai rata-rata siswa dalam post-test 2 adalah 63,8. Oleh karena itu, dapat disarankan bahwa Grammar Translation Method dapat digunakan sebagai metode alternatif dalam mengajar Grammar, khususnya Simple Past Tense. The problem formulated in this research is how the Grammar Translation Method improves students’ ability in using Simple Past Tense. This study uses Classroom Action Research (CAR). Kurt Lewin’s action research design is applied in this research. It has four phases, Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. It is conducted into two cycles. The subject of the research are students at grade X majoring in TFLM 1 (Teknik Fabrikasi Logam dan Manufaktur-Metal Fabrication Techniques and Manufacturing) in academic year of 2017/2018. There are 32 students. In gathering the data, I used Test (pre-test and post-test) in the essay translating form consisting 25 questions. The result of this research showed that using Grammar Translation Method was successful to improve students’ Simple Past Tense. It was proven in cycle 1, the students’ mean score in the pre-test was 23,8. Then, the students’ mean score in the post-test was 56,2. In cycle 2, the students’ main score in the pre-test 2 was 18,4. Then, the students’ mean score in the post-test 2 was 63,8. Therefore, it can be suggested that Grammar Translation Method can be used as the alternative method in teaching Grammar, especially Simple Past Tense.
