Abstract
A politeness strategy is a way for someone to convey the purpose of their communication more politely. Politeness strategy can be observed in every communication between humans, including in the movie. This study is entitled “An Analysis of Politeness Strategies Used by Kevin Hart as a Main Character Found in Fatherhood Movie”. The study aims to find out the types of politeness strategy and the most dominant type of politeness strategy. This final paper uses descriptive qualitative methods, where the author uses note-taking and observation techniques as a medium for data collection. This final paper answers the first question by mentioning data on politeness strategies and trying to classify them based on the politeness strategies theory by Brown and Levinson. To answer the second question, the final paper calculated the main character of the movie the accuracy of the types of politeness strategies in the Fatherhood Movie, and decided the most dominant. There are two results in analyzing the script of the Main Character in Fatherhood Movie. First, the author finds types of positive politeness are 2.8% of Strategy 1; 5.6% of Strategy 2; 4.2% of Strategy 3; 1.4% of Strategy 4; 5.6% of Strategy 5; 7.0% of Strategy 6; 2.8% of Strategy 7; 4.2% of Strategy 8; 2.8% of Strategy 9; 4.2% of Strategy 10; 2.8% of Strategy 11; 8.5% of Strategy 13; 9.9% of Strategy 15. And types of negative politeness are 11.3% of Strategy 2; 8.5% of Strategy 3; 5.6% of Strategy 5; 7.0% of Strategy 6; 5.6% of Strategy 10. Second, the author finds that the most dominant type of politeness strategy is negative politeness (do not assume willingness to comply, question, hedge strategy).
