Abstract

Conflict is an opposition or disagreement between two or more people with goals and interests that oppose each other. Internal conflict exists within a person that involves a battle between emotional and psychological aspects in a person that affects decision-making. In the novel The Sea in Winter by Christine Day, the main character, Maisie, has an internal conflict within herself. The author conducts this research to explain (1) the internal conflict experienced by the main character in the novel The Sea in Winter, and (2) the internal conflict resolution of the main character. This research uses the qualitative method, objective theory, and the theory of approach-approach conflict by Sobur. This study found two conflicts that relate to the approach-approach conflict theory. The first is when Maisie has not recovered from her torn ACL injury; she has to choose between school and ballet. The second conflict is when Maisie should choose between participating in the audition or volunteering at the library. From the two conflicts experienced by the main character, Johnson's theory is used to solve the problem of the two internal conflicts. For the first conflict, it used the owl style. Then, for the second conflict, it used the fox style.
