Abstract

Humans often still do not understand their needs and many individuals are still unable to fulfill their needs because they do not know what their needs are focused on. Therefore, this study aims to analyze what needs exist in Lily in the novel It Starts With Us using Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. This research has three objectives: 1) to analyze what needs are depicted in Lily in the novel It Starts With Us, 2) to find the reason why Lily has a strong drive to fulfill her needs, and 3) to analyze how Lily fulfills her needs. This research is descriptive qualitative research because the researcher will analyze the object of research from the novel, and the researcher uses the literary objective approach as the basis of theory and analysis. The step in obtaining data is that the researcher reads the entire novel and records and collects data that is in accordance with this research, after that the researcher will sort out the data that has been collected and reduce the data to find those that are in accordance with the topic of this research to be analyzed then to make a conclusion. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Lily has and fulfills all hierarchy of needs, 2) the researcher found the reason behind why Lily fulfills her needs, and 3) the researcher found Lily's way in fulfilling her needs.
