Abstract
Humor is a way of communication that provokes laughter to someone or oneself. Humor helps many things in communicating, such as reducing tension when meeting new people or as a coping mechanism that can reduce negativity temporarily. Humor was studied long ago by Plato and Aristotle who divided it into three, namely superiority theory, relief theory and incongruity theory. but Shade (1996) said that there are four types of humor including humor, namely figural, verbal, visual and auditory. Figural humor usually appears in various media, for example television, films, books, magazines, etc. Jokes, puns, riddles and satire are forms of verbal humor. Carrying out stupid and insulting acts is part of visual humor and the last is auditory, because auditory humor uses sound and noise to express it. In this study the researcher will focus only on verbal humor. The main data that will be used is the TV series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, even though the TV series is included in figural humor, the researcher will only focus on the transcripts in that series. There are 49 data of the verbal humor type. Wit appears the most frequently with 12 data (24.48%). Then following by jokes (20.4%), irony (20.4%), farce (18.36%), pun (6.2%), satire (4.08%), sarcasm (4.08%), and the lowest one is parody (2.04%). However, riddle, limerick, anecdote, and tall tale have zero value. Then researcher analyzing it with General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH) developed by Attardo (1994) utilizing the six Knowledge Resources (KRs) they are language (LA), narrative strategy (NS), target (TA), situation (SI), logical mechanism (LM), and script opposition (SO).
