Abstract
Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies that individuals use to deal with stress and anxiety. Although these mechanisms can assist individuals in dealing with stressful situations, excessive or maladaptive use can hinder problem-solving processes and healthy emotional development. This research aims to identify the events that trigger the main character in the novel Night on the Milky Way Train to use the defense mechanisms, analyze the types of security mechanisms used by the main character, and examine the main character's journey as a representation of his repressed wishes. This research uses a qualitative approach with novels as the main data source, where the author carries out analysis based on the title of the research conducted. To analyze the data, the researcher applied psychosocial theory to determine the age development of the main character, as well as two main theories from Sigmund Freud, namely the theory of defense mechanisms to analyze various defense mechanisms found in the novel, and the theory of dreams and repressed wishes to interpret the Milky Way train as a symbol of dreams and desires repressed by the main character. In the novel Night on the Milky Way Train, the author identifies three intensity mechanisms used by the main character, namely avoidance, rationalization, and fantasy.
