ABSTRACT The objectives of this study are to describe the implementation of storytelling technique to improve students’ speaking skill and to describe the effectiveness of storytelling technique to improve students’ speaking skill at class XA of SMK Dirgantara Putra Bangsa Yogyakarta. This study was categorized into Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of the study were the X A students of SMK Dirgantara Putra Bangsa Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2017/2018. The main data of this study which are in the form of vignettes – collected by conducting classroom observation and transcripts – collected by conducting interview, were analyzed qualitatively.The students’ scores were then analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistics. The steps of the study were planning, actions, observations, and reflections. The actions were conducted in July-August 2018 in two cycles. The finding of this study is the implementation of story telling technique to teach speaking improved the students’ speaking skills at class XA SMK Dirgantara Putra Bangsa Yogyakarta. It showed that there was improvement of the students’ speaking skills in some aspects, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency. By implementing the story telling technique the students became more confident to speak English. It also made the students participate more in the speaking activities and get more chances to speak. They could make a new version of story that they learnt and retell during the implementation in joyful way. The improvement was also supported by the students’ average score which increased 7.38 from the average score of pre-test and the score of post-test is 9.79.
