Abstract

Triyanto, Wahyu. 2018. The Effectiveness of Picture Series towars Students’ Ability in Speaking English at SMKN 1 Tempel. Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Education, University of Technology Yogyakarta. Advisor: Juhansar, MA. ABSTRACT This research is aimed to find out the effectiveness and significance of picture series toward students’ ability in speaking English and to find out the factors influencing students’ ability in speaking English. The participants of this research were the members of English Speaking Club (ESC) at SMKN 1 Tempel consisting of 20 students. This is pre-experimental research using one-group pretest-posttest design with quantitative statistical approach. Test data were analized in inferential statistical comparison approach using Paired Sample T-test through IBM SPSS 24.0, while questionnaire data were analized in descriptive statistical approach through IBM SPSS 24.0. The results of tests show that the students’ mean score of pretest was 10,85 and posttest was 13,65. It was proven by the result of Paired Sample T-Test that there was significance improvement in the research where (0.00) smaller than significance level (0.05). This shows that null hypothesis was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that using picture series toward students’ ability in speaking English was effective. Furthermore, the internal factors influencing students’ ability in speaking English are students seldom use English for communication because they are not confident and afraid to make a mistake. The external factors show that the use of picture series motivates students to speak English. The picture series also helps students express their idea and enrich their vocabulary.
