Abstract
The final paper studies and analyses Peter’s sense of community in the novel Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing. There are two problems analyzed in this study: (1) What is Peter’s sense of community; (2) How is Peter’s sense of community portrayed in the novel. The writer uses M.H. Abrams’s Objective approach and McMilan & Chavis‘ theory of sense. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis method which focuses on the analysis of textual data. The data were collected by reading the novel repeatedly, reading some references related to the theory and the novel, taking note of important data, rearranging, ordering, and manipulating the data to generate information and making conclusion. The result shows that (1) Peter has four elements of sense of community which consists of membership, influence, integration and fulfillment of needs, and shared emotional connection, (2) Peter’s sense of membership is depicted in four elements consists of boundaries, emotional safety, sense of belonging and identification, personal investment; Peter’s sense of influence is especially shown in his awareness of his influence on his brother; Peter’s integration and fulfillment of needs is seen in his awareness of the appreciation given to him for what he has done; and his shared emotional connection is portrayed in the interaction between Peter and his family when they spend time together, share the same secret, feeling and experience.
