Abstract

This study is done to analyze the defense mechanism of the main character in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The study aims to describe: (1) the forms of conflict which occur in the main character in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back; (2) types of defense mechanism used by Jack Reacher to handle his conflict. This study uses an Objective approach and Sigmund Freud’s theory (psychoanalytic theory and defense mechanism) to analyze the conflict experienced by Jack Reacher. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method which focuses on the analysis of textual data. Reading the novel, scholarly journals, and theory related to the study repeatedly, taking note of important data, arranging the data, classifying the data and drawing the conclusion were the keys to collect the data. The results of the study are described as follows: first, the writer finds that Jack Reacher has two types of conflict; Inter-personal and Intra-personal Conflicts. The forms of Inter-personal conflict are confrontation, accusation of homicide and paternity lawsuit, and recommission to military police. Meanwhile, the form of Intrapersonal conflict is limitation of options. Second, Jack Reacher’s defense mechanisms are also shown in the movie such as Rationalization, Intellectualization, Anticipation and Altruism. Rationalization is done to cope with confrontation and accusation of homicide and paternity lawsuit. Intellectualization contains the conflict of recommission to military police. Anticipation and Altruism are also done to cope with all of the conflicts in a conscious way. Key words: novel, conflict, defense mechanisms, Psychoanalytic Theory, Jack Reacher
