This research aims to find out the effectiveness of chain writing method in writing a compound-complex sentence and to discover the factors that can influence students' writing ability. Respondents of this research were 20 students, 12 females and 8 males. To find out the effectiveness, the researcher used experiment as a research design with a quasi-experiment non-equivalent control group design. Experiment class was taught using chain writing method; meanwhile, control class was taught without using chain writing method. To discover the factors that can influence students' writing ability, the researcher used a Likert scale questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Bivariate Paired Sample T-test with 5% of significant level through IBM SPSS 22 version. In analyzing the questionnaire, the researcher used a Likert scale analysis. The Paired Sample T-test shows that experiment class gained significant score at 0.011 (Sig < 0.05); meanwhile, the control class gained significant score at 0.367 (Sig < 0.05). The result proves that the use of chain writing method in writing a compound-complex sentence was effective. The questionnaire result shows that motivation factor is the high category with 67.9 index value, learning-teaching method factor is high with 74.37 index value, and the environment factor is high with 70.6 index value.
