Abstract
Politeness plays an important role to make conversation run well. However, there are still some difficulties in applying the polite and proper language to communication. Considering these phenomena, a research of politeness strategies is conducted. This research aims to answer two research questions. The research questions are formulated as follows: 1) what types of politeness strategies are used by the major characters in My idiot Brother movie? And 2) what are the factors influencing the choice of politeness strategies used by the major characters in the movie? The writer used a qualitative method by analyzing the conversation to answer the two research questions. The writer observed and listened to the utterances of the major characters to find out the type of politeness strategies used. Afterwards, the writer analyzed the factors which influenced the major characters in choosing the types of politeness strategies. The research results show that the major characters in My Idiot Brother movie apply the types of politeness strategies, namely bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The factors influencing the major characters in choosing the types of politeness strategies are payoffs and sociological variables which consist of social distance, relative power, and rank of imposition.
